Fresh Meat Quota In South Island Cut By 10 Per Cent.

(P.A.)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. From Monday last the Government has reduced South Island butchers’ quotas of fresh meat by 10 per cent., a reduction which may be made up by using frozen meat. This advice has been received by the Canterbury Master Butchers’ Association, which has circularised its members as follows:— “In an endeavour to reduce the demand for meat, and thus the price of livestock, arrangements have been made by the New Zealand Master Butchers’ Federation for a compulsory reduction of 10 per cent, to be made in the quotas of fresh meat throughout the South Island. This reduction, which may be made up with frozen meat, will remain in force until further notice.” The decision is probably the result of discussions between a deputation from the New Zealand Master Butchers’ Federation and the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash). Last week a deputation waited on the Minister to discuss several matters of importance to the industry, such as high market prices, a new price order, and meat rationing. The Canterbury Association will hear a report from Mr Hughes at a meeting tonight. Other matters which will be discussed will be grading, rising costs, rationing, and price control. It is known that a number of butchers do not favour the present rationing system, which they claim is cumbersome.

NO MENTION OF CUT IN NORTH ISLAND

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. He had not. heard of any decision to cut the supply of fresh meat to North Island butchers, said the president of the Wellington Master Butchers’ Association, Mr O. Dyer, commenting today on the news of a 10 per cent, cut- introduced in the South Island.
