JOINT COUNCIL TO CONTROL INDIA’S ARMED FORCES
LONDON, August 11. The Viceroy of India (Viscount Mountbatten) announced that the armed forces of India and Pakistan will come under the single command of a joint defence council after the transfer of power next Friday, reports the New Delhi correspondent of the British Uinted Press. Field-Marshal Sir Claude Auchmleck, as commander of the British forces in India, will be supreme commander of the two armies. The Viceroy will be chairman of the council. , The joint arrangement will lapse after April, 1948, when the two Dominions’ forces will presumably function independently.
