MORE RAIN FELL AT KARORO LAST MONTH THAN AT TIP-HEAD

The rainfall in the southern area of Greymouth last month was half an inch more than that registered at the meteorological station at the tiphead. According to the climatological station at Karoro, there were 15 days during the month on which rain fell for a total of 7.53 inches, while at the signal station 6.95 inches fell on 16 days. The total for the month was little more than half that recorded in June, and is also considerably less than the 12.19 inches of rain which fell on 21 days in July of last year. So far this year 41.34 inches of rain have fallen at Greymouth, being JO inches less than the total recorded up to August 1 last year. There were only nine days last month on which the sun did not shine at Greymouth, and the hours of sunshine totalled 138.7, giving a total of 513.3 hours since recordings were first taken on April 1.

July’s sunshine in Christchurch (164.34 hours) was a record for the month. At Greymouth, however, there were only seven days last month on which frosts below the 30.3 degrees mark were recorded, compared with the 22 such frosts experienced in Christchurch. The highest air temperature for the month was 57.8 degrees on July 10, the lowest 30.9 on July 19 and 30, while the lowest grass temperature recorded was that of 23.5 degrees on July 5. The average range for the month was 12.6 degrees and the average temperature was 46.1 degrees. ■
