ENGLISH TRIAL ON FRAUD CHARGES
i LONDON, July 30. A case which promises to provide one of the longest hearings in the history of British justice ended its police stage, after lasting for 44 days, when a Hull Magistrate committed I four defendants in the Tarran case for trial at a special assize. It is only the second time that a special assize has been appointed to try a criminal case. The first was in 1932, when the | ringleaders of the Dartmoor Prison, mutiny were tried. I The defendants are Robert Greenwood Tarran, former managing director of Tarran Industries, a big building concern; and three associates, namely, Sir Noel Curtis-Bennet, who, is concerned with only one count ini the indictment; Herbert Southern, [ and Irvin Haylong. The defendants; have pleaded not guilty to charges of! conspiracy and of publishing false I balance-sheets. I Tarran started work at 9s a week.! He built up a business with an annual turnover of £2,500,000, and 10,000 employees. The police court hearing! cost, nearly £3OO daily. j
