Quake Risks In Wellington
‘iThere are no grounds for making such a warning. It is alarmist talk, and undoubtedly, must create a lot of misgiving,”, said the acting-Do-minion seismologist, Mr R. S. Hayes, referring to a recent statement by the chairman of the Red Cross Society, Mr A. E. Gibons, about Wellington’s danger of earthquakes. There was a risk, but Mr Gibbons was distinctly an alarmist when urging the various Red Cross centres to make sure of their emergency precautions, because earthquakes were getting nearer and nearer. Mr Hayes said that there was no greater danger from earthquakes in Wellington today than before, and Wellington was no more shaky an area than the other districts of New Zealand.—(P.A.)
