Opera House Tonight: “Dressed to Kill’’ and “It Happened One Sunday.” Imagine what would happen if a set of United States Treasury engraving plates from which the precious green stuff known officially as currency and, unofficially, as the root of all evil, were to fall into unscrupulous hands. A flood of unauthorised bills would reduce the value of the dollar to a dangerous minimum, and a financial panic would ensue. That hypothetical situation confronts England in “Dressed to Kill,” latest Sherlock Holmes mystery drama, showing at the Opera House tonight. In the film a set of five-pound plates is stolen from the Bank of England. How Sherlock Holmes, played with Basil Rathbone’s customary aplomb, locates the missing bank plates and solves a baffling murder linked to the robbery, is unfolded in a most ingeniously plotted and thrilling story. ’ “It Happened One Sunday”
Introducing two great new stars, Robert Beatty and Barbara White, in a tale from Quid Ireland, “It Happened One Sunday,” showing at the Opera House, is an unusual love story of high merit.
Regent Theatre Tonight: “Do You Love Me?” with Maureen O’Hara, Dick Haymes, Harry James,
The story opens with Maureen O’Hara as a bespectacled, shy, and conservative music college dean, that is, until Reginald Gardiner talks her into becoming “titivated” which opens up for Maureen a world she never knew. What with its enthralling story, Maureen O’Hara’s delightful performance in her musical' , role, Dick Haymes’s wonderful way with a song, Harry James’s keen portrayal of a nice sort of “wolf” (to say nothing of his trumpet playing), the top-notch performance of Reginald Gardiner, Richard Gaines, and Stanley Prager, that exciting dance sequence at the zoo, “Do You Love Me?” is this season’s prize package of musical entertainment.
