DIRECT ACTION THREAT AT PORT CHALIWERS

(P.A.) DtJNEDIN, This Day. The Port Chalmers Waterside Workers’ Union, which supplies the majority of the labour for a wool store operated by the Shaw, Savill, Albion Company at Port Chalmers, decided yesterday that unless the non-union labour at the wool stores is paid at the as unioh labour, no work will be done at ttl6 stores. In an interview, the secretary of the Port Chalmers Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr James Bain, claimed thdt an agreement with the union bf bvei 1 30 years’ standing had beeh broken by the mahag&th&fit of the Shaw, Savill Coifipahy .throUgh its decisions to pay ufiibh labbUr supplied by the Watersides’ Union at 3s 5Jd an hour for ordinary tithe and to pay lion-Uhion labour 3s ah hour, plus the two cbst-of-livihg bonuses. the management contended that the union should create a dispute over the matter, stated Mt Bain, but the union regarded it as a matter of confirming past procedure. Mr Bain added that the attitude adopted by the union would not have any effect on the wool stores in Dunedin. Representatives of the company denied any knowledge of the matter when it was referred to them.
