Australia Withdraws Wage Subsidies

(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The Federal Government wiH soon stop payment of all wage subsidies to industry. This is expected to cause immediate price increases, particularly for wool and cotton piece goods. The elimination of wage subsidies in the weaving, spinning and clothing industries has been announced by the Commonwealth Prices Commissioner, Mr McCarthy. This decision is expected to save the Government about £1,000,000. The withdrawal of the subsidies to the clothing industries, will date from February 14 and will apply to all sections, except knitted garments. Mr McCarthy said that from time to time dates would be set for the elimination of subsidies in other industries.
