OPERA HOUSE.— Finally To-night: "Masquerade in Mexico,” and "Grissly’s Millions.” Commencing to-morrow: “Confidential Agent,” starring Charles Boyer and Lauren Bacall.
Fashioned from the novel of the same name by Graham Greene Confidential Agent,” which stars Charles Boyer and Lauren Bacall, the screen’s newest dream team commences at the Opera House to-mor-row. The film is concerned with adventures of a Spaniard, Denard exmusicain, employed by the Spanish Republican Party as a confidential agent. Ordered to London on a mission concerning the purchase of large stores of British coal, Denarc. meets Rose Cullen, an impetuous daughter of British nobility, who is attracted to the mystery sunounding' the man, then, later, falls in love with him. Their tenuous Jove grows stronger with each succeeding tribulation. Of mortal enemies, Denard has an abundance. Mrs Melandez. manageress of the small London hote± in which he made his abode, Contreras a “contact” man attached to the Spanish Republicans; Licata, suavely treacherous Fascist. Captain Currie, British Army, Ret., and active opportunist; and, lastly, Mr Muckerji, ponderous Hindu and follower of a mysterious Far Eastern philosophy. Denard meets these enemies and outwits them through hair-raising encounters that include one bruta. attack on his person.
REGENT THEATRE.— Finally Tonight: “Waterloo Road.”, Com-, mencing to-morrow: “Kitty,’ starring Paulette Goddard, Ray Milland, Patrick Knowles, Cecd Kellaway. “Kitty” is the story of a London Cockney waif who becomes the talk of English royalty when Sir Thomas Gainsborough exhibits her portrait at the Royal Academy. Paulette Goddard outdoes herself as the flirtatious hussy who makes five men do her bidding, marches three to the altar, including'that prize catch, the Duke of Malmunster, superbly portrayed by Reginald Owen. Ray Milland plays the ingratiating scoundrel for the first time in his career and comes through with a notable performance as Sir Hugh. Constance Collier, one of our most brflliam character actresses, ably assists as the besotted English dowager wno
conspires “Kitty” into the grand lady all England thinks she is and sells her off to the highest bidder on the marriage market. This slow,, painful process of Kitty’s refinement provides 'some delightful bits of comedy.
