BOWLING Dominion Tourney Opened To-day
616 Entrants In Singles Champinship
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 4. One of the warmest and most pleasant days of the summer welcomed bowlers from all over the Dominion to the first New Zealand championships in Wellington since 1940. After light overnight rain the general conditions could not have been better. The Mayor, Mr. Appleton, officially opened the tourney. • The president of the association, Mr. Thomas Lock, eulogised the yeoman service of the secretary, Mr. C. Ingram. Among well-known names in the lists, J. F. Hosking (Parnell) was beaten to-day 24 to 14, and C. Spearman (Christchurch) and-F. Livingstone (Onehunga) both won their first round games by 19 to 15. There are 616 entrants in the singles which competition is being played in 51 sections. Play is on the automatic two-life system. The pairs competition has drawn 519 entries and the fours 304.
