Destruction of Pigs.
The extent of the assistance given to farmers in the back country, ol Central Taranaki by the destruction of wild pigs by hunters can be gauged from the number of snouts and tails on which bounties were paid by the Department of Agriculture at Stratford during 1946. The total number handed in by hunters working in the Whangamomona, Stratford, Eltham, and Inglewood counties during the year was 4859. Of that figure, 4440 were killed in the Whangamomona County.
Drakes Taken from Lake. Thirty or more drakes have disappeared from Virginia Lake, Wanganui, over the past three weeks. They are believed.to have provided Christmas or New Year dinners and some people possibly met the occasions with ducks filched from the reserve. In all. cases male birds were taken, these being in better condition than the females. Four voUng swans also disappeared over the holiday period. They were only a fortnight or so old, but were about half the size of a full-grown duck.
