LABOUR SPLIT
AUSTRALIA AND BRETTON WOODS PLAN “OLD GUARD’’ DIFFERENCES CANBERRA, December 5. “Differences of opinion over the Bretton Woods plan have split the ‘Old Guard’ ‘ which had dominated the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party during the Curtin, and Chifley Governments,” says the Sydney Sun’s correspondent, ■ “Old Guard Ministers who voted against the Cabinet recommendation for ratificatin of the Bretton Woods agreement included the Minister of Laboui' (Mr. E. J. Holloway) and the Minister of Air (Mr. A. G. Drakeford). Cabinet newcomers, the Minister of the Navy (Mr. AV. J. Riordan) and the Minister of the Army (Mr. C. Chambers) are also stated to have been against ratification. “Indicative of the shock party leaders feel is the fact that Parliament, which is scheduled to continue sitting until the end of next week, is now likely to rise to-morrow. Only Opposition prolongation of the 1 de-
bate is likely to keep it going after Friday. Labour’s leaders want to reach the haven of a recess as soon as possible.”
