ABORTIVE RISING

PORTUGUESE MILITARY (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 5. When the trial of officers involved in the abortive army rising at Oporto opened in Lisbon to-day, the defence counsel said they joined the revolt, believing it to be a general military rising, aiming not to provoke civil war but to enable free elections, reports Reuter’s Lisbon correspondent. Counsel added that when the officers realised the movement was not general they surrendered.
