British Colliers. General Eberhard von Mdckensen and General Kurt Maeltzer were found guilty of responsibility for the massacre of 336 Italians in the Ardeatine caves, near Rome, on March 24, 1944, and were. sentenced to death by shooting. The Court announced that the sentences would be subject to confirmation by the commander of the British Forces in the Mediterranean Lieutenant-General Sir John Harding. On March 24, 1944, the Germans took 336 Italians to the Ardeatine caves, which are ancient catacombs on the outskirts of Rome, and machine-gunned them as a reprisal for the deaths of 32 German soldiers who were killed by a bomb which exploded ih a dustbin in Rome as they were marehihng by.—Rome, Nov. 30.
