BRITISH FORCES
DEMOBILISATION OF TROOPS, ABROAD
TRIESTE AND EGYPT
LONDON, December-2.
Britain is depending upon two important international developments for a speed up in demobilisation during the early months of 1947. It is hoped that if agreement is reached upon the administration of Trieste it will be possible to thin out the British forces in Italy, that if a treaty is concluded between Britain and Egypt it will be possible to reduce further the garrisons in the Middle East and that the restoration of more settled conditions in the Far East will make it possible to withdraw more British troops from Malaya and other areas in which there are at present British garrison forces.
If these hopes are realised it is expected that an approximate strength of three divisions will be released early next year. It is not expected that the British will contribute ' more than one brigade to the Allied police force for Trieste and it is hoped to raise local troops in Malaya to replace some of the British/troops at present there. The rate of withdrawal from Egypt will depend upon the rate at which the British and Egyptian treaty is completed.
