SHIPS TO SAIL
BAR SOUNDINGS PROVE SATISFACTORY Soundings taken this morning by the harbourmaster at Greymouth (Captain H. Moar) proved satisfactory and the two bar-bound ships, the Kiwitea and the Poolta, are expected to sail this afternoon. Captain Moar said that there was still a considerable swell on the bar, but the, low-water depth was 14 feet, which would give 24 feet at high water. The shoaling in the lower reaches of the river was still giving trouble, said the harbourmaster. A strong fresh would be insufficient to improve the position and the shoaling would be cleared by the Harbour Board’s dredge, Mawhera, as weather conditions permitted, he added. The Kiwitea, with coal for Auckland, has been ready for sea for over a week, and the Poolta was loaded with coal for Wellington three days'
ago. Both ships are now expected to sail on the afternoon tide at about 3.30. .
