WARTIME VOYAGES PAID FOR THEMSELVES
(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, October 18. “The United States paid more than 1,000,000 dollars a trip for the wartime voyages of the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth on which they carried American troops.” The Queens paid for themselves during the war, said the chairman of the Wartime Commission, Vice-Admiral Y. Smith. “We must have fast, modern passenger ships, and the taxpayers must be prepared to foot the bill,” he added. “The British have always recognised that.”
