MINERS IN THE RUHR
UNION GIVES WARNING TO AUTHORITIES "NEAR BREAKING POINT” (Reed. 12.45 p.m.) LONDON. July 18. The Ruhr miners' trade union has warned British Military Government officials that serious difficulties are being encountered in maintaining discipline, says The Times Gelsenkirchen correspondent. The union declared that although production has been kept up the miners’ morale was near breaking point.
The union feels that stringencies, particularly the food situation, are unfairly affecting the mining communities. Other sections of the community are able to supplement their income from the black market, but the miners are tied to their work by the stern discipline of the North German Coal Control.
Inflation is wiping out their savings and the uncertainty about the future of the Ruhr is contributing to the miners’ unsettled state.
