WATERSIDERS’ WEEK-END WORK COAL SHORTAGE EXPECTED In an endeavour to expedite the loading and departure of cojliers while the seas on the bar remain calm, Grey mouth waterside workers' have decided to work to-morrow and bn Monday, the King’s birthday. Five vessels will be trading here during the week-end and it is considered likely that a shortage of coal will restrict operations before the three larger vessels can be fully loaded. The Kartigi’s loading of gas coal was delayed yesterday when coal from the Blackball mine was held up for some time as a result of a broken railway line between Stillwater and Wallsend about 2 p.m. Repairs took about an hour and the vessel had to wait till this morning for the completion of her cargo. "She sailed this morning for Westport with a reduced load and will complete her cargo at the northern port before continuing the journey to Auckland. Two smaller vessels, the Rata and the Holmlea, berthed last, night and commenced coal loading this morning. They should complete in time to sail this evening.
The Poolta arrived this morning and the Kaimai will arrive to-mor-row afternoon. The Gabriella is also due to-morrow. The Gabriella first has to discharge cargo before commencing to take a small supply of coal and then completing with timber, but it is'believed likely that the two other colliers will be unable to obtain, full cargoes until after the long week-end. There is only a small supply of coal on the wharf at present and most of this will be absorbed by the Rata and Holmlea, while the remainder will rapidly disappear if the work on the Kaimai and Poolta is continued tomorrow and on Monday. With only two of the State and co-operative mines working on Monday little relief can be expected from the coal production on that day. The output is not expected to be great in any case, as it. is considered that attendances are certain to be below standard. The two vessels, it would appear, a ro almost certain to be kept tied up in the port until Tuesday or Wednesday. ■
