“BACK” SATURDAYS

WAIKATO MINERS AGREE TO WORK ■

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 29. The miners of the Waikato have agreed to the request of the Mining Controller, Mr C. H. Benney, to work on “back” Saturdays and on the King’s Birthday holiday, according to advice received by the Mines Department at Huntly from the secretary of the Northern Miners’ Union. The Mining Controller’s request was made because of a’ coal shortage, and was issued throughout New Zealand at the end of last week. Under the agreement to work “back” Saturdays, the miners will work on June 1, and on every second Saturday thereafter, being paid at the rate of time and a-half for a six-hour day. On the King’s Birthday they will work an eight-hour day for payment of triple time.
