BURKE’S CREEK MINE
STATE COLLIERY FROM NEXT WEEK NEGOTIATIONS COMPLETED (0.C.) REEFTON, May 29. After protracted negotiations, which have lasted several months and which on one occasion were broken off, Burke's Creek colliery, Reefton, has, it is understood, become the property of the State Mines Department, , It is stated that the Department is to take possession at the coming week-end.
The mine, which is the largest single production unit in the Reefton coal field, emoloys 65 men and the output is 100 tons a day. The mine was first worked over 40 years ago by a private company, and was later acquired by a public company. There is a full gauge railway line from Reefton railway yards to the mine, and a steam locomotive is used to transport coal to Reefton. Full-size railway waggons are used. The mine is four miles by road from Reefton. Domestic coal for Reefton has been supplied from the area of the Burke’s Creek mine for almost 50 years, and during its long and varied life the area has been one of the main sources of coal in the Reefton field.
