Yearlings in Work at Riccarton
Promising Coast-Owne4 Youngsters [SPECIAL TO STAR.]
CHRISTCHURCH, May 29.
In. addition to the earlier- published list of yearlings in commission or being educated nt Riccprton, the former Greymouth trainer, R. E. Johnstone is handling two likely looking youngsters. One is by Dolomite from Delighted by Delightment from Marble Queen by Marble Arch, owned by Mr C. L. Kettle, of Greymouth, owner-trainer of Dash o’ Dink, and he is to race as Jitima. He is a well-grown gelding, and although he has not yet been put to any test, he has given indications of being able to gallop. Mr Kettle has a soft spot for progeny of Dolomite, as he owned Rockery last season, whom’ he considers one of the best steeplechasers in the country, and whom he solei some months ago for a substantial sum to patrons of F. Rosewarne’s stable. Mr Kettle also owns the three-year-old Rockway by Dolomite, and has hopes of this gelding representing him later in jumping races.
F. D. Jones has had a chestnut colt by Lo Zingaro in work for some weeks, and has given him several short sprints. The youngster is from Miss Vixen, an Australian-bred by Actor from Fox Berry by Son-in-Law. and he was purchased by Air D. McFarlane, of Christchurch, for 670 guineas. He was the only yearling at the Trentham sales by Lo Zingaro, who is by Solario from Love in Idleness by Bachelor’s Double, and is quartered at Otautau in Southland. Hu sired several winners in Australia before coming to the Dominion. Jones is at present breaking in two well-bred fillies. One is by Coronach from Lady Ripon, a sister to Studley Royal, and is owned by Miss Gates; and the other is by Royal Chief from Bereft by Polazel from Miss Varco by NightRaid, owned, by Mrs Woodhouse.
By Paper Slipper J. A. Cox is handling a filly by Paper Slipper from Pink Robe, dam of Royal Vestments, owned by Messrs A. S. Clark and F. L. Turley of the West Coast, and also has a filly, Reshuffle, by Cardsharper from Resort by Arrowsmith from the Stonyhurstbred Seaside.
C. G. Humphries has recently received a yearling colt by Salmagundi from Boaform to train for his North Island owners, who recently purchased him from his Southland breeder. Boaform is by Balboa from Some Form, dam also of Silkwood, Salmaform and Siegform. Humphries is also handling the NeptuneKudos filly purchased last January for 1600 guineas by Mr W. T. Hazlett. Kudos was not raced and was specially imported from England for the stud. She is by Cineraria from Obliterate by Diomedes, and is closely related to Beau Pere, Standfast, Gay Shield and Dink. The yearling is the second foal of her dam, the first, a filly by Coronach, being at present in L. J. Ellis’s stable. She is the property of Mr R. Brien, of Wellington, who paid 300 guineas for her earlier this season. Unfortunately she has been suffering from splint trouble, and Ellis has not been able to do anything more than trotting exercise with her.
Long-Deferred Trip Gayfort was amongst those given strong work on the sand at Ricearton to-day. It was considered likely that accommodation for him would have been ’ available this week on a steamer going to Australia, but the arrival ol the steamer has been delayed and nothing definite can be obtained as to the likelihood of transport in the near future. •* month has elapsed since it was first arranged for the horse to be shipped, hut he has been kept in steady work wiilfout doing any’schoolmg or galloping. In the event of a lurcher hold-up within the next week, it will probably be decided to cancel the trip, and to get him ready to race at Trentham. Gayfort looks exceptionally well, and will certainly be an interesting competitor at the cominf meetings. As far as Ricearton representation is concerned, he can be considered the centre’s best hope o winning some of the main events at the Grand National meeting. Rockery has been in steady work for some*weeks past under the care of E. Rosewarne, and in a year of restricted numbers of likely crosscountry horses at Ricearton he can be expected to do well during the winter. As he has formerly done best without much racing, he is not to be taken to Trentham, but is to be reserved for the Grand National meeting and will probably be given hjs only race before that at the Chn church Hunt Club fixture at the end of July.
