SPORTING Foxchase in Favour for Dunedin
Return to Form Foxchase, who returned to the winning list at Washdyke last Saturday after a long absence, won so attractively that he will be one of the 'better-fancied candidates for the Birthday Handicap at Wingatui. The son of Foxbridge and Senorita had shown promising form, without succeeding in winning a race, just prior to his being produced at the South. Canterbury meeting, and as he won. so easily it appears that A. E. Didham has succeeded in getting him back to the form which at one time suggested he would reach the highest classes. He will be bracketed with Amorlad at Wingatui and as both are capable performers in heavy ground they should at least get some of the money.
Other recent winners in the field include Platform, who' won over a mile and a quarter at Invercargill, Te Anau Lady, winner over a mile at Riverton at her last start, Sir Bernard and Belle Leonne, promoted hacks of promise, and Sing Sing, who was second over a mile and a quarter at the Wairio meeting- and won over seven furlongs later in the day. Death of Constitution.
The good performer Constitution fell while contesting the Hamilton Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday and died almost instantly. The field had covered about two furlongs when he fell. Constitution was a five-year-old gelding by Lang Bian from Big Bertha. He was owned by Mr. R. H. Montgomery and was trained by W. Townsend. Like others of the stock of Lang Bian, he excelled in heavy going, and won the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie two years in succession, scoring in the second division last year, when the event was run in two divisions. Constitution was an acceptor for the Cornwall Handicap again this year. He ! had run urtplaced in each of his races this season. He won a total of £4226 in stakes. Retired to Stud. t Green Note, winner of 10 races, is to be retired to the stud, and has been booked to Royal Chief. By Paper Money, she should be a valuable brood mare. Her owner, Mi-. H. Batchelor, recently turned down an offer of £6OO, but he may put her on the market at the next National Sales at Trentham. Wei! Related.
Miss Delaware, who won at Woodville on Saturday last is by that sire of stayers, Lang Bian from the Lackham—Spare Moment mare Golden Time, the dam being a half-sister to Raratonga. Miss Delaware traces in the fourth remove to Epilogue, a sister to Queen Rose (dam of the New Zealand Cup winner Star Rose) and Yellow' Rose, grandam of Sir Roseberry (G.N. Hurdles and Steeples) and Penury Rose (Grand National Steeples), and half-sister to Roseal, Prologue, and Peronilla (grandam of Gold Salute). Yet, when offered in the salering in January 1942, she was sold at the low figure of 70gs.
Lucky Mistake. Happy Knight, the winner of the English Two Thousand Guineas this year, is one of the favourites lor the Derby to be run at Epsom on. June 5. but it is only by chance that he remains in the race. His owner. Sir William Cooke, sent a letter scratching the colt from the Derby, but as he omitted to put his signature to the letter, the scratching was void.
Corning to Form. Ramicourt, who was having his first outing for some time, was quietly fancied in some quarters for the open sprint at Woodville. However, this °'ood winter performer had to be content with fifth, but he should improve on that placing in the near future.
Unlucky. Persuade, a three-year-old filly by Coronach from that good race mare Oratrix, registered a splendid effort in the hack distance race at Woodville and was unlucky not to win.
