“HOPELESS POSITION”

AUSTRALIA’S NORTHERN TERRITORY'

(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) BRISBANE, May 27. “The present position of the Northern Territory is hopeless,” said the retiring Administrator, Mr C. L. A Abbott, who arrived, yesterday by air from Darwin. “It is anchored by a Government department which is completely absorbed in Canberra affairs The only way the territory can advance is by giving a considerable measure of self-government.” The position in Darwin, in particular, was very confused, he continued. Although the Darwin Lands Acquisition Act was passed by the Federal Government early in 1945, the Government had so far not evolved a policy on land in Darwin. Former residents and landowners were confused and bewildered, and were expressing their irritation.
