CABLE BREVITIES; RIFT IN SWEDISH HIGH COMMAND

A crisis'which^has been disrupting the Swedish High Command reached a climax to-day when the Comman-der-in-Chief (General Jung) sent a message to the Government demanding the removal of General Rosenblad, Commander of the Northern Military District, whose headquarters is Boden, Sweden’s most important fortress. General Jung says that General Rosenblad told him lies about his connection with a Swedish German-Sub-sidised Nazi paper, “Dagsposten,” and thereby forfeited his confidence. General Rosenblad enjoys the support of the Government, which is embarrassed by General Jung’s demand. —Stockholm, April 15. New South Wales Wheat Crop.

A survey of wheat prospects in New South Wales confirms earlier expectations that the target area for the season, 5,200,000 acres, may be exceeded. A conservative estimate gives the yield for the State as 70,000,000 bushels, which alone is enough to fill Australia’s total requirements. Much wheat is still stored in silos awaiting transport to the seaboard. The difficulty is still one of shipping to take wheat supplies to countries threatened with starvation.—Sydney, April 17.

New Jet Engine. The Rolls-Royce Company has announced details of the “Nene” jetpropulsion engine which, the company claims, will enable a single-engined fighter to fly at the same speed as the Gloster Meteor, which established the world record of 606 miles an hour with two Derwent engines. The “Nene,” which is described as the Derwent’s big brother, has a thrust of 50001 b, which is equivalent to 1500 horse-power at 600 miles an hour, and yet weighs only 15501b.—London, April 16.

State Airlines. The Australian National Airways Company, was to-day refused permission by the Full High Court to appeal to the Privy Council against the High Court’s decision to validate the Airlines Act. Under the Airlines Act, the Commonwealth has the power to operate air services in competition with private firms. The Chief Justice, Sir John Latham said that the court held that, under the Constitution, the Commonwealth had the power to create a corporation and to conduct air services, but that the exclusion of competitors would be invalid.—Sydney, April 17.

Britain and Portgual. A monetary agreement -signed between Britain and Portugal practically completes the series of monetary pacts with European countries concluded in recent months, says the city correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. “The official exchange rate remains at 100 escudos to the £l. The Bank of England and the Bank of Portugal undertake to hold each other’s currencies up to a maximum of £5,000,000, any balance either way to be settled in gold. As a preliminary condition.of the pact, Portugal has given assurances that she will not attempt to liquidate her accumulated sterling balance, estimated at £70,000,000 to £80,000,000, over a short period. The agreement will smooth the .way for a considerable expansion of trade between the two countries.—London, April 16.
