EASTER TRAVEL
RECORD CROWDS FROM WEST COAST TRAINS WELL PATRONISED Earlier expectations: that there would be a record number of West Coast residents travelling this Easter have been fulfilled according to the • Railway Department, and practically all east-bound services to-day have been booked to capacity. During the war years travel at Easter was severely restricted. The relief express which left Greymouth at 9.32 this morning, however, proved an exception and there were seats available when it departed. This' train was mainly intended for passengers from Greymouth The ordinary express Sat 10.18 was well-filled on leaving Greymouth, the majority of the passengers being from Hokitika and South Westland. Many more from Westport were picked up at Stillwater. This evening’s railcar will be made a double-unit service in an endeavour to cope with the passengers offering, and the special night train leaving at 11.45 has been completely booked out. All 11 carriages have been reserved.
Further railway services will operate to-morrow but indications are that the numbers travelling will have slackened considerably.
