A London cablegram stated that Mr. J. F. Whittaker, a Labour member of the House of Commons, was found dead on the moors near Burnley. He had been in ill-health and had been missing from his home since Friday.

A Cape Town cablegram announced that Lord McGowan, chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries, had arrived to study possibilities for expansion in the Union. He will visit Rhodesia.

The Presbytery of Westland to-day sustained a call on behalf of the Hokitika congregation to Rev. K. E. F. Larsen, 8.A., a returned padre, of Dunedin. Rev. J. Doig, of Ross, resigned his charge on transfer to Cromwell, Central Otago.

A cablegram from Canberra stated the Federal Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) announced that Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten is likely to visit Australia in February. The visit said Mr. Chifley, would depend on progress made in the settlement of the Indonesian conflict.

The wedding took place recently at Holy Trinity Church, Greymouth, of Jean, third daughter of Mr and Mrs T. F. Cron, Hari Hari, and Rex, only son of Mr and Mrs Athol Tomkies, Greymouth, the Rev. P. Kirkham officiating, Mr. and Mrs. Tomkies will reside at Methven.

A cablegram from Frankfurt stated that General Patton is completely paralysed the result of the motor smash, according to f the official bulletin. An earlier report stated that he was reacting well to the initial shock of dislocation of the vertebrae, although his condition remains critical.

The Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) left Wellington, yesterday, for Auckland, en route to Australia, to discuss trade questions between New Zealand and Australia. He will fly to Australia. It is understood that the chief purpose of his mission is to endeavour to arrange for supplies of wheat to supplement New Zealand’s production next harvest. The Director of Stabilisation (Mr. L. C. The death occurred at Christchurch on Sunday of Mr Alexander- Good, aged 85 years, a former resident of Greymouth. He was born at Dunedin, but lived for many years in High Street, Greymouth, and he followed the occupation of a monumental mason. He transferred to Chirstchurch recently. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mesdames J. Vial (Auckland), F. May (Dunedin), J .Hutton (Christchurch), and four sons, Oswald (Auckland), Clarence, Harry (Wellington), and Eric (Greymouth). The funeral took place at Christchurch this morning.

The death of Francis Rodger Ebbett, Sergeant of Police at Reefton, took place this afternoon at the Inangahua Hospital, where he had been for the past nine .days. Aged 57 years, Sergeant Ebbett joined the police force at Auckland in 1914 and was stationed at Taumarunui, Wanganui (as sergeant), Auckland and Newton before being transferred to Greymouth in 1937. A year later he again transferred, this time to Reefton, where he had been stationed since. His funeral willl take place at Hamilton.
