A London cablegram stated that Princess .Alargaret underwent an operation for appendicitis. The operation was successful and the doctors say her condition is satisfactory. A later cablegram announced that a Buckingham palace bulletin states: Princess Margaret Rose is progressing satisfactorily. The bulletin was issued after three doctors last evening, visited the patient. The King, the Queen •and Queen Mary earlier called on the Princess. The Press Association says the operation was performed in Princess Margaret’s own room in Buckingham Palace between nine and ten a.m. yesterday after it was decided late the previous night to operate.

A New York cablegram announced the death of Robert Benchley, the humourist.

Mr D. K. Kerr, of the staff of the State Advances Corporation, Greymouth, has qualified as an Associate member of the Institute of Valuers.

The funeral of the late Mr. William James Gregory took place this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. The services at the residence of Mr. W. Ward, Herbert Street, and at the graveside were conducted by Rev. C. A. Scarfe.

A Sydney cable message announced the death of Mr. James Patrick Dunn, a former member of the Australian Senate. He was elected to the Senate in 1928. He was a prominent unionist. Many years ago he resided in Greymouth.

Changes of personnel consequent on the death of Brig. N. S. Falla, Chairman and Managing Director, are announced by the Directors of the Union Steam Ship Company. Mr. G. R. Ritchie, of Dunedin, who has been a member of the Board for 35 years, has been elected chairman. Mr. J. N. Greenland, general manager, has been elected managing director and deputy chairman. Mr. M. B. Miller, assistant general manager is now general manager and a member of the board of directors. Mr. H. H. Dobie and Mr. A. N. Leslie, joint assistant managers at head office have become assistant general managers. Mr. Greenland was born at Westport and joined the company as a junior in the Westport offive in 1902.
