WESTLAND GIRL GUIDES

COMMISSIONER’S REPORT The Commissioner for Westland of the Girl Guide Association (Mrs Schaef), in her annual report, states: Statistics: Guide companies, 5; Brownie packs, 4; Lone Guide companies, 1; commissioners, 2; secretaries, 1; Guiders, 17; Guides, 80; Brownies, 55; Lone Guides, 5; recruits, 41. This has been a steady working year and although members have not shown a big increase we are satisfied with the progress and standard of work achieved. Our year’s activities opened with the 21st birthday celebrations. Our numbers being too small to hold a large rally, we held a small competitive rally at Kumara Beach, where all 'companies participated in competing lor ‘the Provincial Shield. Church parades were held for the 21st birthday celebrations, and Thinking Day as well as the usual company ones held throughout the year. The provincial swimming carnival was a new innovation for us, and proved so successful that it has been decided to make it an annual event. We are indebted to Mrs D. Kitchingham, who donated the provincial swimming cup, and congratulate the Ist Hokitika Guide Company on winning that trophy. Guide International Service: AU companies and packs have been working hard in raising funds for the special fund and a considerable sum has been forwarded to Dominion headquarters. All have made collections of various articles and clothing to be included in the UNRRA chests to be sent overseas for relief in Europe. Camping: Although there have not been any company camps held this year our Guiders are showing a keen interest in this vital part of our work. They are doing all that is possible to train themselves and to gain knowledge so as to pass their various permits, and in time, we hope they will be eligible to take their own camps. The Commissioners’ Conference at Waitomo proved most successful, and> there were so many resolutions passed that we feel that the movement will take a big step forward. Mrs Schaef, Provincial Commissioner, was able to attend. I wish to thank all badge examiners, hall committees, the Press, and the Greymouth Swimimng Association and Bath Committee.
