First Win: Silver Rod, winner of the Glenaray Hack Handicap at Hastings. is a four-year-old gelding by Tiderace from Kelowna, a half-sister by Iliad to Epping, their dam being Fintry, by Chief, Rul.er from Desert Gold. Silver Rod was bred at Okawa.
Cabinet Discussions: A Wellington writer says it is understood that Cabinet will discuss this week the question of racing and trotting dates, and also a proposal to set up a Gaming Commission. There is a strong feeling in racing circles that a substantial restoration of days will be announced in the near future.
Stallion Destroyed: Miss J. Cuff suffered a severe loss recently when her Globe Derby stallion, Brilliant Glebe, broke a leg and was destroyed. Miss Cuff has made arrangements for Icevus to come to New Zealand, and the Australian pacer will arrive early this month. This pacer raced in New Zealand /some seasons ago.
Smart Youngster: The Salmagundi —Francolin. filly, Special Flight, showed in the parade at Wingatui on Saturday that she inherits the family gift of galloping displayed by her relatives—Night Wings, Ortyx, Dark Flight, Gold Flight, Winning Flight and Royal Flight. Special Flight will be in strong demand in the McLean Stakes. A yearling half-sister by Nizami has been named Super Flight.
Highly Regarded: Grand Coulee would have been one of the favourites for the Epsom Handicap at Hastings following his stylish winning performance at Awapuni the previous week, but he was not produced. .There is nothing wrong with him, and he is being got ready for a trip to Trentham later in the month. Grand Coulee has been given every chance to develop without much being asked of him, and the policy seems certain to reap its reward.
Versatile: There was a turn-up in the Poland Cup last Saturday, the versatile Betterman outstaying the field and paying solid double figures. He was well back early, but improved his position along the back. Betterman got to Hunting Loch at the half-distance, with Air Port also challenging, but Betterman beat his rival by a neck, with another neck to Hunting Loch, whose rider was considerably hampered when he lost an iron 100 yards from home.
Rakanui Again: Bandaged on both forelegs and looking burly in condition, Rakanui resumed racing in the Lowry Memorial Handicap at Hastings. He, showed all his old-time dash, beginning well and moving with plenty of freedom to trail the leaders for nearly a mile, when his condition failed. He pulled up well, and his owner, Mr. R. J. Jeffares, stated that the veteran was quite sound when he had cooled out. Rakanui was favoured with an easy track in which there was no sting; and how long he will last once the ground becomes firm is questionable.
Promising Stayer: In his only previous effort at a middle distance in the Islington Handicap at the Grand National" meeting, Kaitoa failed to make a showing, but he was not racing well at Riccarton. In his next attempt he won the Lowry Memorial at Hastings last Saturday. He was always well placed, trailing the leader till the turn, where he joined High Ideal, and soon after entering the straight he took charge and won by a comfortable margin. Kaitoa was a smart sprinter and he promises- to make good now over longer distances. He is by Man’s Pal (son. of Manna) from Satisfy, by Solferino from Satisfaction, who descended from the successful Hammock branch of the No. 2 family. Satisfy won the McLean Stakes in 1929.
Slfininq Rina: Mr. A. J. McKenzie, who won the Hastings Stakes on Saturday with Shining Ring, is a comparative newcomer to the ranks of owners, his only previous interest being a share in Sunbeam, who raced some years ago. The filly was bought for him at the national sales in January by Mr. W. R. Stead, and the nr'ice was 375gns. Shining Ring was bred at the Koatanui Stud by Mr. G. M. Currie. She comes from the famous Eulogy family, and is bred on the same cross as last year’s Stakes winner, Majestic, and the smart filly Subdued. Her dam, Burnish, is by Pombal from Episode, by Pombal’s “half-brother Limond from Homage, by Absurd from Eulogy. She strode away from the Wanganui winner, Kirstymac, when asked for an effort and will improve a lot yet.
