FOOD FOR BRITAIN

N.Z. RATION CUTS EFFECT “It is difficult for most of us to form any idea of the extent to which the decreases in our meat and butter ration since June have affected the supply to civilians in Britain,” says the bulletin of the New Zealand Women’s Food Value League. The league had written to the Controller of the Economic Information Service to clarify the position. “At present some people are finding the reduced butter ration rather difficult,” the Controller had replied. “Some of them know that the butter saved by this reduction represents an extra 5000 tons of butter. A few calculate that it means two weeks’ butter ration for the people of Britain. What is overlooked is that this extra 5000 tons represents the whole year’s British ration for 1,700,000 people. At present New Zealand supplies the year’s butter ration for 39,000,000 British people. By providing -enough for another 1,700,000, we lessen very considerably the extent to which Britain must rely on other sources for her butter.” “The meat position can be put in a similar way,” the reply continued. “At present New Zealand supplies the yearly meat ration of 9,500,000 people. The cut in New Zealand’s own ration, by freeing an extra 15,000 tons of meat will bring the total of yearly rations provided to 10,150,000, or another 650,000 people. “These figures show how our small ration cuts are going to help the people of Britain,” the Controller concluded. “I think you will find that explanation welcomed by many people, and it would help rationing authorities and those concerned to get- as much meat and butter as possible to Britain.”
