HOCKEY AUCKLAND, Sept. IG. Tire New Zealand women’s hockey tournament concluded in fine weather. The championship, which carries with it the K. Cup, was'won by Otago, which was undefeated with 14 championship points. Auckland and Canterbury each obtained 10 points, and will jointly hold the Lloyd Shield, and Wellington, in third place with seven points, secured the Holden Cup. Auckland caused a big surprise on Saturday by easily defeating Canterbury by 6 goals to 0. Results of the final series of matches were: Auckland 6 (Misses M. Coldham, 3, S. Lymburn, M. Cotter, and J. Miller), Canterbury 0; Otago 5 (W. Middleton 4, M. Eaton), Poverty Bay 0; Rangitikei 3 (L. Paterson 2, E. Pedersen). Wanganui 1 (E. Davison); Wairarapa 2 (N. Page and E. Cameron), Wellington 1 (J. Hatcher).

The lead in the Australian chess championship once again passed to Steiner when he beat Shoebridge. Lazaro, who was level with Steiner, was unexpectedly beaten by Salm (Queensland) who took full advantage of Lazare’s indifferent opening play. The New Zealander, Wade, was lucky to win his game. He was let off by D. McGrath, who overlooked a simple winning combination. The leading players, with three rounds to go, are Steiner. 9A; Purdy. Hawes. In his first bout for over 12 months Hoggarth recently dropped a points decision over 10 rounds to Hawes at Christchurch. . SYDNEY, September 17. Al Stock the New Zealand lightweight, who was outpointed by ‘Rag Tozer in his only Sydney engagement, is matched with Archie Rash for next Saturday night at Sydney Stadium. Rash has a win to his credit over Tommy Chapman, when Chapman was featherweight champion.
