GOLF. A slight increase in the membership of clubs is recorded m the annual report of the New Zealand Golf Association (Inc.). The number of affiliated clubs increased to 215 from 206 in the previous year. The revenue account showed a surplus oi U 1 5/7, and the accumulated fund remained at £l9OO, being invested in War Loans and deposits in the Savings Bank. The annual general meeting of the Association will be held in Wellington on October 30. CHESS. SYDNEY, September 11. C. J. Purdy has again taken the lead in the Australian chess championship, but the New South Wales champion, L. Steiner, will be ahead of him if he wins the adjourned game with F. A. Crowl (Victoria). Purdy, last night, defeated Watson. The title-holder, G. Koshnitsky, obtained, an opening advantage against the New Zealand champion, R. G. Wade. Koshnitsky was able to secure a winning position, but he mishandled it and the game was drawn. The leading scores after seven rounds are: Purdy s|, Steiner 5 (with one adjourned), Lazare 4| (one adjourned), Wade 4A, Koshnitsky 4, Harris 4.
