RACING AND TROTTING

FORTHCOMING FIXTURES. Sept. 15: Ashburton. Sept. 15: Wanganui. Sept. 22: Geraldine. Sept. 22: Thames. Sept. 22: Foxton. Sept. 29: Hawke’s Bay. Sept. 29: Otago. Sept. 29: Ohinemun. TROTTING September 15: Auckland. September 29: Methven. From Tasman Flight: Abel Tasman, which is engaged in the Selma Trot, at Ashburton this week; is now trained at Washdyke by P. P. Gallagher. Abel Tasman is by Calumet Axworth from Tasman Flight which is by Wrack from Young Ivy. This is a well-known West Coast family. Young Ivy (Croesus —Ivy B.) owned by J. Shrives and ridden by A. Fass won a mile saddle race at Victoria Park on December 30, 1922. Ivy B, the dam of Young Ivy, won the Greymouth Trotting Cup in 1904, when owned and driven by J. R. Coburn. That was in the days of slower times for Ivy B’s Cup, over two miles, occupied 5.25.

Should be Good: An interesting addition to the Stud Book has been made by Rocks Ahead (dam of Navigate) in producing a filly to Springfield Globe. Rocks Ahead was got by Happy Voyage—First Water, by Harold Rothschild —Red Diamond, by Prince Imperial from a Blackwood mare. She paced a mile on the grass at Winton in 2.5 3-s—speeding over the first hall' in 1.1 3-5. Harold Rothschild was got by Rothschild—Harold’s Rest, by King Harold (who raced here under the name of Trust), a son of Childe Harold. Prince Imperial was got by Hambletonian Bell Boy—Princess, a granddaughter of Traducer, from a Prickwillow mare. Princess produced three foals—two of them to thoroughbred sines. Blackwood was got by Wildwood from a granddam returned as a thoroughbred. Springfield Globe has a thoroughbred granddam in Kildasa, and thus his daughter has a thoroughbred strain through her sire and also through Harold Rothschild, Prince Imperial, Blackwood, and King Harold, and a remote one through Rothschild. The thoroughbred infusion, toned by light-harness strains, should make the Springfield Globe—Rocks Ahead filly invaluable for the stud after developing speed on the track.
