A London cablegram states that Air Chief Marshal Tedder has been promoted to be Marshal of the R.A.F.

Rev. J. T. Holland, M.A., has accepted the offer of the cure of St. Peter’s, Upper Riccarton. Mr Holland is the elder son of the Bishop of Wellington.

A London cablegram stated that Mr D. P. Blades, K.C., Sheriff of Perth and Angus, has been appointed Solicitor-General for Scotland. The appointment is not political, and he will not have a seat in Parliament.

The death has occurred at Auckland of Captain Rowland Christian Hammond, of Ponsonby, general manager of the Northern Steamship Co., Ltd., aged 71. Captain Hammond had been on a health trip to Australia, and returned last week-end. — PP.A.

The funeral of the late Mr Patrick Flannagan, of Greymouth, toox place at Karoro Cemetery this morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patiick’ Church by Rev. Father McCarthy. Rev. Father Flaherty conducted the service at the graveside.

After 16 years as vicar of St. Mary’s Cathedral, and nearly eight years as Dean of Auckland, the Very Rev. W. Fancourt has announced his resignation to take effect at the end of January. He reached the retiring age about 18 months ago, but decided to continue until the end of the war. —P.A.

The Minister of Labour (Mr Webb) ieft Wellington by ’plane this afternoon for Auckland on the first stage of his journey to Paris, where he will he one of tne Government’s representatives at the International Labour Organisation Conference in October. He was accompanied by Mr H. E. Moston, Secretary of the Department of Labour, and Mr R. E. Kemp, Private Secretary to the Minister as adviser. Mr Webb was seen off by the Prime Minister and other Ministerial colleagues.

The appointment of Colonel H. J. Thompson, Wellington, to be a Stipendiary Magistrate was announced today by the Minister of Justice, who said that Col. Thompson would be leaving for New Plymouth next Tuesday. Mr. Thompson holds the M.C. and degrees of M.A., L.L.M, Master of Commerce. He was secretary of the Law Society at the outbreak of the war, and when the Eighth New Zealand Brigade went to Fiji in 1940, he commanded the Twenty-ninth Battalion. He returned to New Zealand in 1942 and was placed in charge of the department dealing with prisoners of war, and internees’ war graves, at Army Headquarters. In December 1943, he was appointed Deputy Adjutant and has held that, position since.—P.A.
