STEVE DONOGHUE DEAD
IDOL OF RACEGOERS
LONDON, March 23. Once England’s leading jockey and the idol of thousands of racegoers, Steve Donoghue died early this morning. He was born 60 years ago in Warrington, Lancashire, and worked in a steel works before becoming a jockey. . For a number of years previous to the Great War, Donoghue was the leading jockey on the English turf, and from 1915 to 1925 he rode six Derby winners, Polymelus, Gay Crusader, Humorist, Captain Cuttie, Papyrus, and Manna. He also won the Two Thousand Guineas, and the St. Leger, but perhaps his greatest triumph was with Brown Jack, who' won the Queen Alexandra Stakes of two miles six furlongs and 85 yards for six years in succession.
