RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME. March 24: Manawatu. March 24: Waimate. March 24: Bay of Plenty. March 31, April 2: Auckland.

TROTTING. March 24, 31: Metropolitan. March 31: Hawera.

Berry III: R. B. Berry, who is ill, will not be driving at Addington on Saturday. His horses will be handled by D. C. Watts.

Gold Bar: As A. Holmes is not satisfied with the progress made by Gold Bar, a proposed attempt at the mile record at Addington on Saturday will not take place.

From Cup Winner: Palantua, a New Zealand Cup winner, was represented by an Irish Lancer colt, Royal Chance, in the Trial Stakes at Oamaru. The three-year-old attracted attention by his useful fourth.

Change of Stables: Happy Man is now in E. Carlyon’s stable at Addington. He won the Mason Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting in January, and is engaged at the Easter meetings.

Coming Back: Rink ran his best race of the season to finish fourth behind First In—Tara King and Foxhaven at Trentham last Saturday. The Ringmaster gelding should soon lead a field home.

Unlucky: Immediate was a close fourth in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham, and would have been closer, if not even the winner, had he riot received a check just before reaching the straight. Immediate will win his share of races before the season closes.

‘ Late Run: Alright was at the back of the Railway field at Trentham in the early running, but came on the scene in the last half furlong with a strong run which carried him into second place. He was regarded as definitely unlucky.

Dazzling Burst: Confusion came with a dazzling burst of speed to get up for third in the Plunket Handicap at Trentham. The Chokebore filly should soon be a winner on this running. It was a good performance to get third from 19 at the barrier.

From Valaclore: Native Song, c hurdler and aged half-brother by Hunting Song to Kindergarten, is to be trained at Riccarton by M. P Robinson for G. R. Hunter and P. C: Webb. Native Song has not raced since the 1942-43 season.

Might Improve: Chiding has been a good track worker, but a poor i acehorse. She is now being schooled at Riccarton and has been making friends with good exhibitions of jumping. She. has speed and the breeding, if not the temperament, to be a useful winner over the battens.

Useful Form: Dundee Sandy, who is on the front of the Craven Handicap of two miles at Addington on Saturday next, has useful form to his credit. He has had two wins in ■six starts this season, and at Forbury on a slow track led all the way in a two-mile event in January beating, among others, Warform, Lucky Loyal and Navigate.

At Templeton: W. R. Butt now has Benghazi in his stable at Templeton. After running third to David' Dryden and Calumella at Timaru this trotter was transferred from Mr. N. Orr to Mr. S. Brown. In his new colours Benghazi won at the matinee meeting at New Brighton last Saturday, and he should not be long in making a return at a totalisator meeting.

Won Comfortably: Palissy, who won the Plunket Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, is owned by Mr, T. Fisher and is trained by T. R. George. He is by Robin Goodfellow from Dresden China, dam also of the Iliad horse, Greek Shepherd, a Derby winner. Palissy had a fairly comfortable win and looks a good horse in the making. He cost 1850 guineas at the 1944 sales.

Sold for £1000: Mr H. H. Cook has Sold the four-year-old pacer Loyal Chief (Grattan Loyal—Chieftainess) to Mr H. Steel for £lOOO and the gelding in future will be trained by C. S. Donald. He had had seven starts this season prior to last Saturday for two seconds and twe thirds, but on Saturday led all the way in a mile and a-half race at New Brighton to win in 3.25.

Good Stayer: Authentic, by Night Raid from Seventh Heaven, recorded the easiest win of the clay at Trentham last Saturday, when he was first home in the Champion Hack Handicap. Authentic was well placed all the way and once inside the final furlong he came away to win by several lengths. There is a future as a stayer for this gelding, who is owned by Mr. W. Payne, of All Night fame. When raced at Omoto in February Authentic failed' to handle the track and was well beaten.

Southerners: Sure Harvest outclassed the Menzies Handicap field at the Wyndham’ meeting on Saturday, winning by 12 lengths in 4.46 3-5. He is bred the right way to reach the best classes, being by Quite Sure from Garner, and his record to date has made a big impression. The appearance of this trotter on Canterbury courses will be awaited with interest, in view of the performances of such as Blue Horizon and Will Cary, both of whom hailed from the south. Elation, who was recently sold for £5OO, was another impressive winner at the Wyndham meeting. He has been in the money in three of his six starts this season. Elation is a five-year-old by Quite Sure from Arran Sun. WAIMATE FIELDS WAIMATE, March 21.
