REEFTON NOTES
;OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, December 28. Weekly coal production in the Reefton field for railage from Reefton to Canterbury markets and other South Island centres for the period ended December 23 totalled 3,403 tons. This figure has not been reached for some weeks, being due to the complete clearance of bin storage accommodation at the several mines prior to closing down for the Christmas period. In addition to this tonnage the railway station also handled a large quantity of coal from mines in the Buller coal field for transport to Stillwater for the Midland Railway. Need for additional switching accommodation, with the growing number of telephone subscribers at Reefton Post Office has made it necessary for the Department to install a second telephone board to provide for a further 100 new numbers. The installation work is completed and the board is now in operation. All the new numbers are _ not connected, though the office in common with other Post Offices in the Dominion has a waiting list of persons, who are anxious to have telephones installed. As material and labour are available these numbers will be added to‘the Reefton exchange. One hundred and thirty-five persons are now connected by telephone, the number having r grown from 76.
