CAMPAIGN IN ITALY
CANADIAN PROGRESS
LONDON, December 14. Canadian troops of the Eight Army, in a day of heavy fighting, considerably enlarged the bridgehead over Lamone, and thus beat off strong enemy counter-attacks, stated today's Allied communique from Italy. We have cleared Mezzano on the right, of the bridgehead. Advanced elements are approaching Canal Enaviglio on a wide front north of Bagna Cavallo. British sth Army troops south-west of Imola entered Tossignano and Borgitossignano against strong opposition. MAIN ROAD CUT. (Rec. 11.0) LONDON, December 14. Eighth Army Canadians reached Kesselring’s Lamone defences on a wide front to a depth of two miles, says Reuter’s Rome correspondent. Allied tanks after crossing the Lamone cut the Ravenna-Ferrara road, leading to the heart of the Po Valley. Allied forces in the Adiatic are fighting in hailstorms and rain. Activity again flared up on the Fifth Army front. Enemy opposition increased in the central sector, and south-east and south-west of Bologna, where they unsuccessfully attempted to seize high ground. BONOMI’S CO-OPERATION. LONDON, December 14. ; The Prime Minister of Italy (.Professor Bonomi), in addressing his new Cabinet, said he had given a pledge to the United Nations that the truce regarding the constitutional question would be respected by all. Consequently, the Ministers would oe expected to keep the spirit and letter of the oath they had just taken. He had also given a pledge that each Minister should acknowledge he haff seen the armistice terms of Septem-« ber 1943. These terms, he said, were very hard, but he admitted that they had been interpreted in a more benevolent fashion since the resumption of diplomatic relations with the United States. This was due m part to the tact and understanding spirit shown by the head of the A.lliea Commission. ___
