To-day is the 49th birthday of King George VI, and flags were floAvn on public buildings in Greymouth to mark the occasion. His Majesty’s birthday is officially observed in June.

Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Kehoe left this morning, for Dunedin.

Mrs. R. Buchanan left to-day on return to Picton.

Miss M. Ray left this morning for Christchurch,

Rev. Father J. McCarthy left last evening for Christchurch.

Rev. Father Bell, S.M., of St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, is visiting Greymouth.

The death of Mr. William Hughes Field, Avho had represented Otaki in the House of Representatives for 33 years when he retired from politics in 1936, occurred in Wellington yesterday. Mr. Field was born at Wanganui in 1861. He was a practising barrister and solicitor in Wellington. —P.A.

Mr. W. Pj. Gilbert, Secretary of the Grey Harbour Board, Avho on Tuesday" completed 34 years service with the Board, was congratulated on his capable service to the Board over that period, at last eVening’s Board meeting. A motion of appreciation moved by the chairman, Mr. J. Mulcare, and endorsed by several members who eulogised Mr. Gilbert’s service, was carried Avith acclamation.

Foreign decorations won by three members of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. were presented to recipients by Brigadier E. T. Rowlings at a ceremony at Burnham military camp to-day. The men were 2nd Lieut. J. Denvir, D.C.M. (Christchurch), who received the Soviet Medal of Valour, Captain H. M. Smith (Dunedin), Greek Military Cross and Sergeant S. W. Fleming (Dunedin) Greek Distinguished Service Medak—P.A.
