DEAD ON ROAD
WESTPORT, September 10. Ralph Bi-adley, married, aged 44 ye'arsi was found dead on a road at Millerton on Friday evening. He had earlier been at a store making purchases.
ILLEGAL BETTING AUCKLAND, September 11. With race meetings at Ellerslie, Wellington and Wanganui on Saturday, members of the-Auckland’De-tective Force carried out a series of raids .on illegal betting establishments. As a result of this sweep, nine men appeared at the Police Court, this morning, all pleading guilty, seven to using the premises as a common gaming -house, and two to carrying on the business of ,a bookmaker. Fines imposed ranged from £5 to £lOO, the Consolidated Fund benefiting to a total of £.450.
TRAINER’S FATAL INJURIES WANGANUI, Sept; 11. Fred McHugh, of Marton, racehorse trainer, died at Wanganui Hospital early this morning as a result of a fractured skull received on Saturday night when he fell from a fire escape at the rear of the Criterion Hotel, Wanganui. Nobody saw the accident but is is surmised the deceased mistook a door on the fire escape and stepped through to fall on to the concrete yard below. . McHugh, who was 38, married, one child, brought a number of horses to Wanganui races on Saturday. He had been connected with racing all his life, first as a jockey and later as a successful trainer.
MOTORIST KILLED CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 10. One man was killed and three ethers injured when a car whicn was travelling from Kaikoura to Oaro struck a telegraph pole and overturned off the road. It fell down a steep bank alongside the Ballam siding, on the beach near Goose Bay railway station. The accident happened shortly after 6..30 p.m. on Saturday. The victims were:--Killed: William Alexander Reid, aged 21, the driver of the car. Injured: George Solomon, aged 17; Eru Hautapu, aged 22; John Stirling, aged 22. The injured suffered severe bruises and shock. They were taken to the Kaikoura Hospital, and to-night were reported to be making satisfactory progress.
BABY’S AERIAL TRANSPORT AUCKLAND, September 10. In an endeavour to save the life of a month-old baby who was taken critically ill with pneumonia at Great Barrier Island, a Royal New Zealand Air Force aeroplane was. dispatched from Hobsonville to bring him to Auckland. The child was admitted to the Auckland Hospital and was in a serious condition to-night. A Walrus amphibian machine, manned by an air sea rescue squad, left the base to-day within a few minutes of the hospital’s request for assistance. The mother of the child, Mrs. Jessie Medland, and a district nurse accompanied him on the return flight. Oxygen was administered to him throughout. He was transferred to a waiting launch and then to an ambulance.
