PRODUCTION COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

The West Coast Council of Primary Production met at Greymouth on Saturday, Mr D. B. Jellie Pi’esiding. Also present were Messrs W. Clayton, W. Fisher W. Vallance, E. Armstrong, C. Marshall, R. Beckett, H. G. Carter. G G. M. Mitchell, V/. Searle, J. Fleming, and J. Mulcare (Secretary). The Meteorological Department advised that special flood warnings were not to be broadcast or published in the Press. It was decided. to express appreciation of the service rendered by the Department in the matter of weather forecasts. . The Department of Agriculture advised that the only type of appeal for fertiliser which could be considered would be from returned soldiers, the closing date having been April 30 for ordinary appeals. . Mr Mulcare said he had received about 50 applications after the closing date. Mr W. R. Millier, Public Service Liaison Officer, intimated that rural field cadetships were available for outstanding boys. Mr R. Chibnail wrote commenting on the discussion at the previous meeting concerning tree planting on the Coast, and stated that exotic trees were to be found- all over Westland. The Coast would grow anything from lemons to rata.

Mr Mitchell, who took part in the previous discussion, said he would not say anything inimical to the welfare of the Coast; he had suggested that a scientific survey be made of areas deficient in boron and cobalt.. It was decided to seek the cooperation of the Marlborough and Nelson. Councils in obtaining, with the West Coast Council, representa* tion on the Dominion Council. Mr Fleming stated that the pig cropping subsidy forms were available at the office of the Department of Agriculture, where he would be pleased to discuss the position with farmers.
