SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

OTAGO WINS SHIELD AUCKLAND, January 23. The largest crowd for many years packed the Olympic pool, Newmarket, on Saturday evening to see the final carnival at the New Zealand amateur swimming championships. The feature of the finals teas the brilliant performance of the Canterbury representative, Miss O. Hobson, who won the 100 yards women’s freestyle championship, thus annexing three national titles. Miss Hobson had previously won the 220 and 440 yards free-style. She showed remarkable finishing powers and he’’ victory was popular.. Miss M. Pasalich (Auckland) again proved a fine stylist easily to win the 220 yards breaststroke, and earlier, the 100 yards title. V. Vail (Southland) showed his superiority to retain the intermediate boys’ titles and C. Chambers (Canterbury) succeeded in the 220 yards intermediate boys’ race to win three championship events at the carnival. Chambers is a prominent swimmer. The War Memorial Shield for the most points in championship events was easily won by the Otago Centre, with Southland second and Auckland third. Results:—
