It is understood that early next month the Westport section* of railway line will come under the administration of the Railways Department. When the transfer eventuates the new section will be amalgamated with the Northern District, South Island, and will be administered by the District Traffic. Manager, Christchurch, while train running operations will be controlled by the Stationmaster at Greymouth. An inspection of the section was carried out, this week, by Mr. P. H. Morey, District Engineer of Railways, Christchurch, and Mr. E. F. Evans, District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, satisfaction being expressed with the progress of the final stages of the work. Four or five weeks will elapse before the clearing up has been completed. The construction of the line has extended over a long period, several interruptions having taken place.

If expectations are realised, a marked improvement in the system of light warning signals at the Tainui Street crossing, Greymouth, will take place shortly. Following representations from the West Coast Automobile Association to the Railways Department to provide an additional light on the left-hand side, of the crossing, near Revingtons, a communication was received, yesterday, from the Chief Electrical Engineer, Wellington, concurring m the ,Association’s view that a light should be placed there, but pointing out that the standard equipment for crossings was only one light on each side of the line. The excutive of the Automobile Association viewed the crossing yesterday, with Mr M. J. Gallacher, Signal and Electric Lines Inspector, and concurred in the proposal to transfer the present signal across the street, where it is expected to give a much more arresting warning, the beam being directed to the Post Office. When the Association’s acceptrance reaches Wellington the changeover will be approved and work will begin shortly. The other signal, which is on the left-hand side when approaching the town from the south, will remain in its present position.
