Smart Sprint: Lord Advocate and John Gay did the best six of the morning at Riccarton yesterday, recording 1.14 4-5 and finishing abreast.
Trip Off: The Southland W. Swale, whose Cup candidate, Royal Lancer, had to be withdrawn ITom the race because of a ricked shoulder, will also be without the services at Riccarton of his Derby candidate, Invulnerable, a half-brother to Royal Lancer. The coll has been, suffering from the effects o£ a bleeding attack during his race at Invercargill last Saturday, and will be spelled.
Blood Treatment: Foxleap, who .dropped out of the N.Z. Cup, has not broken down. She is being treated for the blood parasite that has been transmitted to descendants of The Ace, and will be racing again during the Summer. Fast Passage was given the same treatment before she won the Winter, New Zealand, and Auckland Cups.
Donnybrook Fair Destroyed: Donnybrook Fair broke a hind leg during training at Riccarton yesterday morning and was destroyed. He was to have run in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday. He was a live-year-old brown horse by Foxbridge-Babel and besides being one of the best-looking horses in commission at Riccarton, possessed a rare turn of speed. Tempting offers for him had been refused and it was intended that at the close of his racing career he should join the Stoneyhurst Stud.
Best Miles: Kevin, who is one of the fancied lightweights for the Cup, is usually a poor track worker, but at Riccarton yesterday morning he recorded the best mile gallop, taking 1.42 2-5, the first three in 37 4.-5 and the first half in 51 4-5. Palfrey finished a neck in front of Scottish Dale in 1.44 2-5, with Night Pal and Foxhaven together three lengths away. Representative impressed in defeating Expanse by six lengths over a mile in 1.43 2-5. Expanse was not as impressive cis in his previous gallop since coming south.
