ARCHITECT’S FEES
BULLER HOSPITAL BOARD '•To rny mind, this is a glaring example of plans being made for a building ■as expensive as possible, said the Chairman of the Buller Hospital Board (Mr W. H. Mclntyre), at a meeting of the Board yesterday, when consideration 'was being given to a report from the Department of Health on the plans for the Granity Maternity Hospital (says the “Westport Ne\ys’ : ). A serious departure from the standard plans was remarked on by the ■ Department. The foundations were unnecessarily elaborate. Timber sizes were too large and the proposed septic tank was too elaborate. There were other minor faults, the Department stated, and general simplification was needed. The plans were not approved. , < The plans were prepared by the Board’s architect, Mr A. McDonald. “No wooden building'in the Buller has been built like that,” said Mr Mclntyre, explaining parts of the plans to members. “It’s absolutely absurd!” Mr Mcintyre stated. Unfortunately the plans had not been seen by the Board before being submitted'to the Department. The plans must, be reviewed by an architect other than the one who prepared them. The architect’s proposed hospital would cost at least £l5OO a bed. Mr J.' Dowgray stated that ratepayers were protesting about hospital building costs. Mr Mclntyre said that as far as he was concerned this was “the last straw.”
Mr Dowgray moved, and it was carried, that the matter be held over till next meeting. It was as well for the Press to know, MF Mclntyre stated, that Mr MacDonald had submitted an account for fees for £3975/12/-, of which nearly £lBOO had been paid. Lots of his items would not be recognised 'by the Government. The account would be an eye-opener to ratepayers. It was decided that a copy of the account be sent to the Department and that consideration be given to it
at the next meeting. . After a previous meeting, the Hospital Board decided to dispense with Mr MacDonald’s services. He is concerned now only with the completion of the new laundry at the Buller Hospital,
