[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, August 18. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held on Tuesday, Mr. G. G. Chisholm S.M. presiding. William A. Bray, who did not appear was charged with the theft of a cow cover, owned by R. F. Cochrane, value 27/6. He was convicted and fined £3, costs 10/-. Joan Bray pleaded guilty to theft of a cow cover owned by Martin Bourke, value 23/-. Defendant was convicted and fined £3, costs 10/-. A first offender for being found on Licensed premises after hours, at Waiuta, was fined 5/-, costs 10/-, expenses 13/6. Roger Dale, as Inspector of Coal Mines, charged F. W. Archer, as manager of Defiance Coal Mine, with failure to make an accurate report on the state of mine machinery and gear as required by the Coal Mines Act, and with failing to appoint for the Defiance Coal Mine the necessary fireman-deputy to carry out the duties of this official, and failure to carry out the necessary duties of fireman-deputy himself. Defendant pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was convicted and fined £1 on each offence, and ordered to pay costs totalling £l. The Reefton Women’s Institute celebrated its birthday, with an evening at the band room, which was well attended. Numbers were contributed by Mrs. Leaning, Misses B. Lochore, J. Duff, N. Bierwirth, J. Archer, and Nicholls Sisters (3). Mrs. Yellowlees welcomed the visitors, and presented trophies to the winners of the points competition. Mesdames Duff, and Cleaver equal 1. A dance was held for which Mesdarnes Archer, Eklund, Nicholls and Miss Duff supplied the music. Mr. W. Hempseed presided at the monthly meeting of the Inangahua District Patriotic Committee. Letters were received from Mrs. W. J. Humphries (Reefton) advising that 32 scarves, 25 balaclavas, 42 sets of mittens, and three sets of navy socks in knitting had been despatched during the month. The Westland Provincial Patriotic Council advised that the next quota of hussiffs was now 640. Alexander Mines Ltd. forwarded 17/10 monthly donations from employees. B. Mirfin forwarded £lO from Ikamatua Committee. G. Williams forwarded £l2 being donation from Blackwater. Secretary of Reefton Red Cross Society advised payment of £2O to headquarters and that portion of this sum would be allocated to Inangahua District Patriotic Funds. Mr. J. B. Discaciati reported that 20 cases of gift parcels were packed waiting despatch to Wellington. A resolution was passed that the Westland Provincial Council be recommended to make the standard packing for soldiers.’ gift parcels, to six in each case. A discussion was held concerning the total lack of support given to Inangahua Committee by the Waiuta area. Mr. Wells moved, Mr. Hempseed seconded, that the Waiuta Committee be again written to regarding their share of contributions to Inangahua District Patriotic Funds. It was resolved that it be assertained from the Westland Council the method by which the Inangahua district quota was fixed.
