Prior to his departure for Rangiora, a complimentary smoke concert and presentation was tendered to Mr. J. McLaughlin at the Memorial Hall on Saturday evening. The function was organised by the Kumw.’-I R.S.A. With whom the local Home Guard Unit and all sports bodies were associated and was a great success. Hokitika R.S.A. was represented by Mr. J. Perham, president and Captain J. Hutchison, who together with Captain Jefcoate of Taramakau, represented the returned men of the present war. Mr. H. Hamer acted, as master of ceremonies. After the Loyal toast the following toasts were duly honoured: “R.S.A.” responded to by Mr. J. Brown, vicepresident of Kumara R.S.A. and Mr. J. Perham. “Fallen Comrades” responded to by Mr. L. W. Bassett, the “Last Post” being played by Mr. W. Haybittie. “New Army and Nurses” responded to by Mr. H. O. Jefcoate. “Our Guest” proposed by Mr. A. Birss president of the Kumara R.S.A. who made complimentary reference to the guest of the evening, Mr. McLaughlin. As a token of respect and remembrance, he presented Mr. .McLaughlin with a chiming clock. Mr. Hamer joined in the proposing of this toast and presented Mr. McLaughlin with a purse on behalf of all the other associated bodies. Mr. McLaughlin suitably replied. “Kindred Sports,” was responded to by Mr. J. McFarlane for the Sports Club, Mr. J. Reedy, Sports Club and Racing Club and Mr. F. Rudkin, Picnic Committee. “Home Guard” responded to by Mr. G. Malcolm-son. “Borough Council” responded to by Mr. J. Murphy (Deputy Mayor). “The Visitors” responded to by various visitors. “The Ladies” responded to by Mr. AV. Lawrence. «
