STEEL CONTROLLER. WELLINGTON, June 16

After the visit of an Anglo-Ameri-can steel mission, comprising Sir John Duncanson, Iron and Steel Controller in Great Britain, and Mr. E. A. Emerson, a representative of the War Production Board, it became apparent that the appointment of a steel controller would be necessary,” said the Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan), in a statement to-night. He said that the controls exercised over the use of steel in New Zealand had been of such a nature that certain prohibitions had been made operative. The desire of the mission was that a scheme of control be operated in all British Dominions similar to those in force in Britain and America. To effect such control it became apparent that the appointment of a steel controller was necessary, and Mr. Sullivan announced that Mr. F. R. Picot, Commissioner of Supply, had been appointed to that post. The necessary regulations for the introduction of the control scheme were now being considered, said the Minister, and he added that he was sure everybody would realise the importance of New Zealand coming into line with Britain and America in the control scheme.
