OBITUARY
MR. S. G. SMITH
NEW PLYMOUTH, May 21. Mr. Sydney George Smith, who twice during his lifetime held Cabinet rank, died at New Plymouth this evening after a short illness. Mr. Smith was born at New Plymouth in 1879. He was for 20 years an employee of the Railway Department, and was an officer of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants for 13 years and held several trade union offices. He was member of Parliament for Taranaki from 1918 to 1925, and for New Plymouth from 1928 to 1938, being chairman of committees for a number of years. He became Minister of Labour and of Immigration in 1930, and was Minister of Education in 1934-3,5. He held the position of president of the Taranaki School Committees’ Association and chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, and had been a member of the New Plymouth High School Board and New Plymouth Borough Council, having held the offices of deputy-mayor and chairman of the electricity and tramway committees. He is survived by his wife, three sons serving overseas (Captain E. G. Smith, a war prisoner, Captain R. S. S. Smith, and Pilot Officer H. A Smith), three, daughters (Mrs. R. H. Turnbull. Stratford, Miss E. Me Smith. W.A.A.F., and Miss L. H. Smith. New Plymouth). STR A. RANSOM
DANNEVIRKE, May 22.
The death of Sir Alfred Ransom, M.P. for Pahiatua, occurred early this morning, after a brief illness, though he had been in changeable health for some time. He was aged 75. He leaves a widow and a married son and daughter.
